Redefining Island

Ostrov procitnutí

On a sun-drenched island where love is a competition and beauty the only currency, Tiffany begins to question what does it really mean to be beautiful.

It's the final ceremony of a dating reality show, Jason chooses Tiffany to win the grand prize: a romantic honeymoon on an exotic island with him. The dream of a perfect relationship quickly fades. They have little to say to each other, her swimsuit is uncomfortable, and the heat is relentless. Jason embraces the sweat, feeling confident and desirable, while Tiffany feels pressured to conceal every trace of it. When a drop of sweat slips down Tiffany’s skin, it triggers a series of surreal experiences that challenge her understanding of beauty and self-worth. As the pressure to conform intensifies, Tiffany is pushed to either submit to society’s ideals or reclaim her body on her own terms. What does it mean to be a woman?

Director’s statement
This film explores themes of women’s body image, objectification and the male gaze. It’s inspired by my own experiences as a woman – living in a body that’s constantly being looked at and commented on. For a long time, I felt that my body was judged as an object, and I often longed to escape this reduction of my identity.
I explore this theme from a feminist perspective, while also aiming to create a film that is accessible to audiences. For this reason, I incorporate humor and comedic elements, which help to open up difficult topics with lightness.
The main animation technique is claymation, which closely relates to the theme of physicality – it allows for the depiction of the characters’ bodies, their beauty, as well as their imperfections. I will also use the stratacut technique, enabling dynamic and visually striking deformations of the material. The part of the film in which Tiffany leaves her body and enters an alternative world will be created using pastel animation on paper.
