Far from home, a young woman has built a new life for herself. A roof renovation throws her life off balance and increasingly feels like an invasion. The noise, the workers outside her window, and the disruption to her apartment make her safe haven feel alien and threatening. The main character can no longer visit her birthplace, and her grandmother is barred from entering the EU due to sanctions. Separated by over 1,000 kilometers, they talk about home, loss, new laws, and the war in Ukraine, clinging to their memories. As isolation, cold, and a loss of control set in, the woman’s reality begins to shift: cracks appear in the apartment, water seeps in, and her connection to her grandmother breaks down. An image of family warmth emerges and then fades away. Eventually, she is forced to leave the apartment. The film is based on documentary recordings of phone calls between the director and her grandmother.
Director’s statement
I deliberately take a stand against the isolation of Russian voices. Especially in the cultural sphere, I consider this isolation dangerous, as it can reinforce the mechanisms of state propaganda. I was ten years old when I moved from Kaliningrad to Germany with my mother and brother. From then on, I became “the Russian girl,” the person everyone looked at whenever Russia, Putin, or the Soviet Union were mentioned. In 2022, that feeling of estrangement deepened. While the world around me continued as usual, my own life seemed to stop. Since then, filmmaking has become my way forward and my way of speaking about topics my friends and colleagues back home can no longer discuss openly. Through this film, I want to give a voice to those in Russia who oppose the war but are increasingly silenced, and to show the emotional reality of exile, distance, and fading hope. It is a story about separation, identity, and the struggle to hold on to human connection across borders.
