In the film “Wavebreaker’’ the waves of the sea are women... a wave is a wave only in the middle of the sea, but once headed to the shallow – it dies in love's tide.
“Wavebreaker” shows a collision of feminine and masculine through imagery of waves versus a breakwater. The main character is a part of a generalized image of seducers, playing with the gentler sex. This group archetype will embody the image of a breakwater, tearing the waves. Setting himself apart from the crowd of men-tetrapods, the main womanizer catches a series of women-waves. They crash into him, spill at his feet, die for him in wading depth. He tears them apart, steals their hearts and has relations with them far from smooth sailing, leaving them lifeless foam and drops. This vile game of seduction and cruelty eventually bores him, as do all his admirers. He drifts apart from them, only to be caught in the same mind games he had used. It is a story about dominance, about meeting a “Femme fatale’’ just when you thought you were riding the crest of the wave. The narrative presents unmatchable female nature, lust and sex influencing relationships in erotic atmospheric animation.
Director’s statement
The idea of "Wavebreaker" means a lot to me, it has matured over time and transformed from personal itch into an objective perspective and now it is ready to become an animated artistic film. Its story about seduction, with poetic nature, will be reflected in the visual allure and imaginative atmosphere. Much of the meaning will rely on symbols and associative connections. It is inspired by the concept of a Bulgarian poem - “The Waves of the Sea are Women”. My goal is to create a visual counterpoint between the sides of the conflict, with a mix of 2D frame by frame animation and puppet animation. The aim is a rendezvous of techniques and distinct characters that carry different strength – charged by the material with which they are depicted. The visuals, music and story have to attract the viewer to a surrealistically presented topic, which is viewed with disapproval, yet it holds some mystique attraction and is doomed to be found in human relations.
