The Lookout is an animated short film about our place in the universe, through a romantic relationship between two teenagers. Like a moment suspended in time.
One moment, one eternity. From absolute nothingness emerges an explosion of light, then of matter, then the Earth. Life appears, first wild, then human. Time passes inexorably, bringing us images after images to a certain end, the one of everything. In parallel of this Great History, another one, tinier. A suspended, disconnected moment. Two teenagers meet on a vacant lot, maybe the beginning of a love story. The Universe will have experienced many important moments in its evolution ; the one that Louis and Nina are gonna share that day is perhaps the most precious of their existence.
Director’s statement
A few minutes from my house there is an old slag heap. I like to walk there, like dozens of other people, and let my mind wander. What stories does this place have to tell since its creation? What will it experience when we are no longer here? I then turn to my teenage son, who is less interested in the past and the future than in the present, centered on his own emotions, his own life, as if disconnected from the universe around him. And what would happen if we placed a fixed camera, lying in wait, to capture the history of the universe in about ten minutes? Through a graphic approach mixing realism, cosmic poetry, documentary inspiration and animation, I wish to reflect on these notions of passing time, our place in the universe, our relationship to the world around us and, more concretely, to the beauty of small, seemingly innocuous moments. Retranscribe in my own way the intersection of the infinitely large and the infinitely small.
