PINK PUNK DELTA

Pink Punk Delta

When drought and a river diversion threaten the balance of the Ebro Delta, Mar, an 11-year-old girl, sets out on an adventure to defend her home, discovering the importance of connecting with nature.

Mar is eleven years old and lives in the Ebro Delta. This summer seems destined to be the most boring of her life: her friends are on vacation and her older sister no longer wants to play. Her mother is deeply worried about the drought threatening the rice fields where she works, and to make matters worse, her father has taken a job at the river diversion site, which will soon leave the crops without water. Frustrated, Mar finds refuge in nature, where she meets a blue-eyed flamingo that watches her and slips into her dreams. A deep connection grows between them, beyond words. When neither the farmers' protests nor the birds' sabotage stops the river diversion plan, Mar comes up with an idea: to unite all the Delta's birds in a spectacular dance across the sky. This choreography awakens collective consciousness and stops the project for good. When summer ends, Mar returns to school proud and transformed, aware of nature’s power and of her own ability to protect what she loves most.

Director’s statement
The Girl and the Flamingo is a coming-of-age through the eyes of Mar, an eleven-year-old girl who discovers her first true sense of belonging through nature. Inspired by my own summers in the Ebro Delta, this story reflects both the fragility of a threatened ecosystem and the opportunity for a spiritual reconnection with our environment. Mar experiences an intimate transition from childhood to adolescence, discovering the power of play, imagination and empathy. The film draws inspiration from works like "Totoro", "The Neverending Story" or "Spirit of the Beehive", while capturing the culture, landscapes and inhabitants of the Delta. The Girl and the Flamingo invites both young and adult audiences to reflect on our relationship with nature, with our communities and ourselves, reminding us that we can transform society through tenderness and cooperation. It is an intimate ode to life, to hope and to reconnection with the world around us.
