PERFECT

Perfecto

On a day at the beach, a young boy tries to reach a kite beyond a dune; a six-year-old girl wants to reconnect with her grandfather; and a nonagenarian embarks on a journey to an unknown destination.

A young boy is isolated from the rest of the world; his only companion is a kite beyond an enormous dune. When a shadow puts the kite in danger, he gets himself in an unknown journey. Meanwhile, Alba, a six-year-old girl, plays with a sand castle on the beach, finding joy in little acts of love towards her grandfather, Perfecto, an absent-minded nonagenarian. Amid these intimate moments between grandfather and granddaughter, the young boy makes actions intended to affect the kite’s constant swing, leading him to the top of the dune, unveiling he is a small miniature in Alba’s and Perfecto’s universe. Despite his tiny appearance his presence disrupts the granddaughter-grandfather dynamics awakening feelings that none of them know how to deal with. Alba would need to go beyond the barrier Perfecto has created between them. Perfecto explores the bond between two generations, where symbols play a paramount role in weaving a story that delves into the complexities of aging and parting.

Director’s statement
Perfecto delves into the idea of saying goodbye to someone you deeply love but with whom it is impossible to have a vivid connection. It explores a grandfather-granddaughter relationship in the last years of the nonagenarian's life when he has lost the sense of his surroundings and even himself. In their personal journey, they try to reconnect with small acts however, slowly, they realise that they have to prepare for what is unavoidable.

This film seeks to depict the process of dying as part of life and how it can bring bittersweet feelings with it, as well as peace and connection. Although this story reflects on the director's personal journey, the message it conveys can resonate with a universal audience since we all have lost someone we love. This short film presents two realities to create a set in which symbolism alternate with genuine and pure acts of love between the two main characters.
