Bugs

Kids preschool comedy series about bugs, friendship, empathy and diversity

Bugs is a gentle, humorous animated series for preschool children about a small world with big feelings. Set in an urban micro-world with backdrops of three distinctive European cities and their surroundings – Oslo, Barcelona, and Bratislava – the series follows two clumsy bug friends who befriend many other tiny bugs like themselves, struggling with loneliness, fear, or simply feeling different. Through humor, careful observation, and nonverbal storytelling, the series invites children to empathize, be curious, and discover the value of friendship and mutual support.

Director’s statement
As the author and future showrunner of Bugs, I see writing, rhythm, and visual storytelling as inseparable parts of the same creative vision. My approach to this series is deeply informed by my daily work at Ekocentrum Čunovo, an environmental education center near Bratislava where we connect children with nature through interactive programs and exhibitions. Part of our work involves introducing children to the world of insects — observing their behavior, understanding their role in ecosystems, and learning to see these tiny creatures not as something alien or frightening, but as neighbors sharing our world. Watching children's faces light up when they discover a beetle under a leaf or follow an ant's journey across the ground has taught me something essential: children are natural observers. They don't need explanations first — they need time, space, and permission to look closely. The series grows from this belief in close observation of everyday life — small moments, misunderstandings, and gestures that often pass unnoticed, yet carry emotional weight. I am particularly interested in how children perceive the world before language shapes their understanding. They see, sense, and feel before they name or explain. This is why Bugs has no dialogue. Without words, the focus shifts entirely to action, timing, sound, and visual detail. Emotions and relationships are experienced rather than explained. This approach leaves space for interpretation, imagination, and deeper personal connection.
