When Anatine, the philosopher and painter duck, flies off to town for a simple loaf of bread and mysteriously vanishes, his overly-cautious, slightly OCD best friend Moko embarks on a search through the intersecting worlds of humans and the Livings.
The town of Snow is inhabited by anthropomorphic creatures called "livings", who are similar to humans but live by their own rules. In the same space, there is also the ordinary human world, which is revealed indirectly. Anatine and Moko are best friends living in an old abandoned house. Anatine is an anthropomorphic duck, and Moko is a creature with pointy ears. Moko is obsessed with bread and can’t start his day without it. One day he discovers that there is no bread at home. On a trip to town to get the bread, Moko and Anatine experience a violent encounter with a human hunter and are separated. The story unfolds from three perspectives. In Moko’s story, we see how he searches for his friend. In Anatine’s part, we see what happens to him as he stumbles upon strange changes in the town, with everyone having boarded a bus to a new, seemingly perfect place where freedom and rewards are abundant. The third part tells the story of the human hunter from the beginning of the story.
