The Art of Sand Animation

In this CEE Animation Experience masterclass, filmmaker and animator Zane Oborenko invites audiences into the fascinating, tactile world of sand animation.

Using her film Kafka. In Love as a case study, Zane provides a practical look at the medium: from the technicalities of choosing and preparing materials to the complexities of the animation process.

The session goes beyond the traditional to explore sand as a proven tool for modern storytelling, including its application in documentary film and mixed media. Zane will also share recent illustration works and experimental tests, discussing the unexpected visual illusions that can arise when moving objects interact with specific color fields. By reflecting on her creative journey and the productive challenges encountered along the way, she reveals how to navigate the physical limits and technical risks of the craft while embracing the limitless expressive possibilities of working with sand.
