The Place of Home

Kodu Koht

Between a family and their home lies a frontline, new regimes, and a vast lake. Is one lifetime enough to pave the way back home?

In 1916, a young couple from Southern Estonia travels to Petrograd, seeking medical help for their ailing infant daughter. As she begins to recover, the February Revolution erupts, delaying their return. By the time they are ready to leave, the Estonian War of Independence blocks their path. Stranded in a small village within newly formed Soviet Russia, the husband fights against an impenetrable bureaucracy to secure passage home. When his father dies, he is granted a brief return to Estonia—on the condition that his wife and child stay behind. Back in Estonia’s freedom, he is torn but returns, fearing for their safety. Soon after, he is arrested and executed. Years later, his daughter, now a mother herself, remains in a small Russian village, bound by fate to the land that once trapped her parents.
