Rotoscopy in Animation

Rotoscopy is experiencing a renaissance, especially in adult animation and art-house projects. This session explores what rotoscopy truly is (and what it isn’t), tracing its artistic roots and examining why the technique is resurging today. Using insights from three recent productions (Peasants, Rock Bottom, and Children on Fire), the speaker will share when rotoscopy becomes the right artistic and production choice, along with lessons learned about workflow, creative challenges, and pipeline management in real-world studio conditions.

This session is financially supported by Creative Europe MEDIA and co-financed by the governments of Czechia, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia through Visegrad Grants from the International Visegrad Fund. The mission of the fund is to advance ideas for sustainable regional cooperation in Central Europe.
