Through the Blizzard

Kroz mećavu

After failing to sell their last cow, their only means to survive the winter, a grandfather and his grandson begin their long journey home through a raging blizzard - facing both the cruelty of nature and the ghosts of their past.

It is winter in Krajina, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Relja Knežević, once a respected man and now an old, impoverished farmer, tries to sell his last cow to feed his only remaining descendant, his grandson Vujo, and honor his dead on All Souls’ Day. When no one in town wants to buy the cow, Relja and the boy begin their journey home through the snow. As the blizzard grows stronger, Relja can no longer tell the present from the past: his lost estate comes alive before him - workers, songs, and herds - along with the tragic days when everything was lost. The storm erases the boundary between memory and reality, merging pride, pain, and helplessness in the old man. Determined to protect Vujo, Relja gives him his own clothes and keeps calling through the snow: “Are you coming, my kin?” Their struggle ends in a final embrace where love overcomes fear, and death arrives as quiet mercy.
