The Apartment

Dzīvoklis

Over the course of one century, an apartment calmly observes the events unfolding in it and the changing fortunes of its residents, becoming the main protagonist of the story.

From a static vantage point with limited range of vision we observe life in one apartment in Riga over the course of one century. We see only what enters our field of vision, but we can hear sounds coming from unseen parts of the apartment too. There are fragments of people’s lives, spanning six generations, from the very first residents to the very last, and the uninhabited periods in between when the only occupant of the apartment is time. During those hundred years the apartment undergoes transformations, as dictated by different eras it witnesses, collecting both tangible objects and intangible vibes, something the residents are unaware of. Watching different people’s lives and different ears unfold we realize that we are all inhabiting that apartment, at the same time, and perhaps it is observing us too.
