Mud Misery and Bohemians

Bahno Bída Bohémové

The breathtaking story of Bohemian and German settlers to New Zealand.

This is a powerful story of courage, hope, and sacrifice. Martin Krippner, a Bohemian dreamer and former soldier, believed in a better future on the far side of the world. In 1861, he and his wife Emily left Europe for New Zealand. Though he failed as a farmer, his heart burned with the vision of a new home for his people. Through heartfelt letters, he inspired 83 Bohemians to leave behind everything they knew. Their farewell at the train station was filled with tears, prayers, and promises of a land without hunger or cold. After a long, dangerous 106-day voyage, they arrived not to fields and homes, but to wild forest and two huts. Shocked and unprepared, they faced winter with almost nothing. Yet from hardship bloomed strength. In the darkest days, they clung to faith and to one another. As settler Kathleen Mooney said: “When you asked the old settlers how they survived, they answered: it was faith and solidarity. All of us were helping each other.”
