Homo Mulier
Homo Mulier
In 2625, in an ultra-rational society of male clones, a curious Biologist and a young Teacher secretly investigate the forgotten history of the supposedly extinct Homo Mulier - woman.
In a distant future, women have been extinct for five centuries—or so everyone believes. In a secluded village populated by identical male clones, life unfolds in perfect order, governed by routine, scientific curiosity, and a peculiar absence of emotion. When a village teacher begins experiencing strange dreams of intimacy, he and a biologist embark on a secret investigation into the lost species known as Homo Mulier. Digging through buried artefacts and fragmented recordings from the past, they attempt to reconstruct the mysterious lives of women. But their discoveries reveal more about the limitations of their own world than the civilization they seek to understand. As the teacher gradually awakens to desire and falls in love with another man, the biologist becomes consumed by a startling possibility: perhaps women never went extinct at all. Perhaps they simply left.
Director’s statement
Homo Mulier originates from a family memory. During moments of frustration, my mother would sometimes say: “You’ll see what happens when I finally leave.” As children, we found it funny. Years later, I began to take the sentence literally: what if women really did leave?
Together with co-writer Kaja Balog, I imagined a future society populated entirely by men, where women have gradually been erased from collective memory. Rather than explaining their disappearance, the film explores what their absence has left behind.
Rooted in a gentle feminist perspective, Homo Mulier is a comedic satire about what we bring into each other’s lives and what might be lost when an entire part of human experience disappears. Through colourful, hand-drawn 2D animation, I want to create a playful, slightly distorted future that contrasts with the emotional emptiness beneath its surface. The project is currently in a phase of visual development.
