Far Away

Far Away

The film tells the story of a little girl who spends her vacation living with her grandfather – the keeper of a lighthouse.

The two are happy together and bravely tend to the lighthouse. But the grandfather increasingly sinks into the darkness of his clouded mind. The girl manages to save him from the incoming tide, but things become dangerous. His episodes threaten the safety of them both, so the child’s parents take them back to the city. Deprived of his work, far from the sea and the lighthouse, the proud, strong man begins to shrink. Away from his dignified life, he is no longer the same. One night, in a daze, the grandfather wanders off in search of the sea and the lighthouse and gets lost in the city’s dark streets. There he sees the surf, the sea, and the seagulls. But then he startles. Confused and lost, he falls into panic. The little girl is frightened, but she remembers how to find her grandfather. She begins switching the light in her room (on the top floor of their building) on and off, showing him the way. And not only that. The child restores the dignity of the old man.

Director’s statement
FAR AWAY tells the story of an old lighthouse keeper slowly disappearing into the fog of his fading memory, and a little girl cherishing the joyful summer days with her grandfather. It is a story of loneliness, fading memories, and above all, the power of love to bring back the light when everything seems lost. Inspired by real life, the film focuses on emotion rather than action.
Visually, FAR AWAY draws inspiration from 20th-century comics, particularly Jordi Bernet and Hugo Pratt. Soft pastel tones contrast with deep blacks, dramatic shadows, and strong light.
Traditional hand-drawn and hand-painted animation, combined with a 3D camera, creates an expressive, stylized world. The lively little girl contrasts with her towering grandfather, whose figure gradually shrinks as his memory fades.
The warm, romantic world of the lighthouse and the sea stands in sharp contrast to the cold, alienating city.
The film has almost no dialogue. Its only spoken word is the child's “Grandpa.”
Music and sound shape the emotional atmosphere. Gentle, nostalgic melodies and the sounds of the sea give way to harsh urban noise, while echoes of the past continue to break through.
FAR AWAY is an 8-minute color animated film for audiences of all ages.
