Belutak

A mute girl meets an older man who claims he can restore her voice. The healing, however, soon begins to change more than her words.

Mute girl Belutak is mocked by her peers until an unusual older man, Savo, defends her and claims to have healing powers, proving it by wounding and curing a bird. Hoping to speak, she follows him to his remote estate. Deer block her path, but Savo drives them away. As he performs strange rituals, her speech improves, yet at night he hides, gravely ill, while the deer grow violent. Soon fur begins to grow on Belutak’s legs, but trusting Savo, she ignores the signs and even helps him bury a deer he kills. The next day Savo appears strangely rejuvenated while Belutak grows weaker. At the well she sees a girl in the reflection, but when she turns, a deer stands behind her. Realizing the deer are young girls, she begins to transform as horns grow from her head. Savo bursts in, thrilled, calling her special. Belutak destroys the ritual object behind the curse. As Savo weakens, the deer attack and kill him. They return to human form, as does Belutak, though she remains mute.
