CEE Animation organised the first Green Animation Lab in Gdansk, Poland

Between November 25 – 27th we organised the first Green Animation Lab for Polish animation producers and studio representatives in collaboration  with Ecoprod, a French association focused on sustainable audiovisual production and policy and SPPA – Stowarzyszenie Producentów Polskiej Animacji. The pilot training marked a major step forward in supporting more sustainable animation practices across the Central and Eastern European region – an area where structured environmental training for animation studios has, until now, been largely absent, or based on live-action industry-based practices.

Organised in cooperation with Ecoprod and SPPA – Stowarzyszenie Producentów Polskiej Animacji, the two and a half day programme brought together animation producers, studio managers, and creative professionals from across Poland. Participants from across the national industry, spanning 2D, 3D and stop-motion studios established production houses, creating a dynamic environment for shared learning and exchange.

The training was led on-site by Valentína Hučková, CEE Animation’s Sustainability Manager, whose work focuses on building greener standards for animation and film workflows across the region. The programme combined in-person sessions with online expert lectures, hands-on exercises, and group discussions to create a comprehensive learning experience.

Over the course of the workshop, participants explored key aspects of environmentally responsible production, including:

  • Understanding the environmental impact of animation studios and their specific production processes
  • Measuring and reducing planetary impact / carbon footprints through practical strategies, covering energy use, materials, supply chain, digital workflows, and waste management
  • Implementing long-term change by engaging teams, decision-makers, and external partners in sustainability efforts

This marks a significant milestone for the CEE region, where animation production is rapidly developing and increasingly aligning with European sustainability goals. By providing concrete tools and methodologies, the Green Animation Lab aims to empower studios to adopt greener practices without compromising artistic quality or production efficiency.

“We are thrilled to see such strong engagement from the Polish animation community,” said Valentína Hučková, the Lab’s main trainer. “The animation industry, just like the wider film industry, also has the potential to optimise and “green” its processes, supply chains and workflows. This training shows that practical and impactful sustainability strategies are both achievable and could even save costs for animation producers and studios. But the producers need to see and feel that their energy and effort are paid back in some way. Many people still do not consider the simple fact that there is no Planet B. I hope that trainings like this and industry events focused on sustainability can help shift this perspective towards a common goal.”

CEE Animation extends its gratitude to Ecoprod as main contributor and to all trainers and contributors, namely Alissa Aubenque (Ecoprod), Stéphane Morali (Carbulator), AnimFrance, Ilan Urroz (Foliascope), and Juliane Block, whose expertise significantly enriched the programme.

With the success of this first edition, CEE Animation hopes to continue expanding the Green Animation Lab across the CEE region. We are looking forward to continuing this momentum and supporting greener animation practices across the industry!

Let’s go green together!
