CEE Animation at MIFA Conference – “Greening European Animation” Panel
On June 25, CEE Animation took part in a panel discussion titled “Greening European Animation” at Annecy International Animation Film Market (MIFA) at Rotonde de l’Europe, Imperial Palace to explore the European way of sustainable transformation in animation.
The panel brought together international panelists Jean-Baptiste Wery (CEO and Producer at French animation studio OOOLALA and member of the Board of Directors of AnimFrance), Ann Mulrooney (Studio Manager and Sustainability Advisor at Irish animation studio CARTOON SALOON), Alissa Aubenque (Head of Operations and International at French non-profit association ECOPROD) and Valentína Hučková (Sustainability Manager at CEE Animation). The discussion was moderated by Chiara Zappalà (Manager for the Creative Europe MEDIA programme at Relais Culture Europe).
European animation professionals gathered to discuss and promote sustainable initiatives and practices within the industry.
One of the main focuses of the panel was the release of the ANiMPACT Sustainability Standards, led by Ecoprod, Green Film and CineRegio. ANiMPACT aims to establish a unified certification system for sustainable animation production in Europe, providing a shared framework to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint and environmental impact.
ANiMPACT is now in its pilot testing phase, following a two-month public consultation of the draft standards. ANiMPACT is supported by Animation in Europe, Cartoon Italia, CEE Animation, Anim’France and CARTOON, among other partners.
Producers can apply to test the standards in real production conditions on their own projects and provide feedback that will help shape the future of sustainable animation in the CEE region and across Europe.
The panel underscored that sustainability in animation cannot be achieved in isolation. Industry stability and meaningful environmental impact require collective action, shared resources, and cross-border partnerships. Valentína Hučková, representing CEE Animation, emphasized the need for adaptability of the ANiMPACT standards across different working conditions and regions, ensuring inclusivity and effectiveness between both high and low production capacity countries and stressing the difference in infrastructure as well as state of production in different countries of the CEE region.
Jean-Baptiste Wery (OOOLALA, AnimFrance) presented the Carbulator, a practical instrument designed to help animation producers and studios measure and reduce their carbon footprint. Launched in March 2025 in France, Carbulator is a carbon calculator accredited by the CNC – The French National Centre of Cinema. Its methodology combines the measurement of the carbon footprint of studios as permanent infrastructures, and that of productions, which often span several years and involve multiple sites. The goal for Carbulator‘s European rollout is to establish a common version that offers studios a harmonized, recognized framework, and lay the foundations for a future international standard.
Screen Ireland supported the launching of the English language version of Carbulator from 2025. Ann Mulrooney (Studio Manager & Sustainability Advisor at Irish animation studio CARTOON SALOON) joined the panel to present the studio’s experience with using Carbulator, collecting and preparing the necessary data to measure the carbon footprint of the studio and selected projects. Her direct experience with the tool in its English version offered a case study with practical insights.
Through discussions on the ANiMPACT standards, animation industry’s carbon calculator Carbulator, and real-world studio implementation tips, panelists shared practical strategies, European and national policy perspectives, and creative approaches to reducing environmental impact across production pipelines.
The panel was part of MIFA’s broader program for professionals, which included workshops, lectures and forums on funding, AI, sustainability, and co-production. Free Consultations on Environmental Sustainability
CEE Animation also offered free in-person consultations on environmental sustainability in animation production and environmental sustainability strategy development to CEE producers and studio owners attending MIFA 2026. These consultations are a critical component of CEE Animation’s strategy to promote sustainable practices, share knowledge and reduce the environmental footprint of animation production.
