Scope of the Universe

Scope of the Universe

Scope of the Universe is an ambitious animated documentary series for teens about science and philosophy. Based on the most recent research, we invite on a journey of discovery and wonder.

There is so much we don’t know! What we do know is that before the beginning, there was nothing. Then, in a blink of an eye, there was everything. How did everything come to be out of nothing? How did everything we know begin? Lead by a narrative voice and an astronaut, each episode deals with a theme or mystery in cosmology. The introduction to the episode starts through a familiar angle for the target audience, whereby we expand with scientific additions before adding a new perspective through philosophical wonder. With a seven episode structure, told through voice-over, a silently philosophical astronaut and ambitious 2D and 3D animation, every episode will explore a part of an overall and coherent narrative. We start where we ended, continuing onwards creating a journey of knowledge through space and time, to the brink of the vast ocean of all we still don’t know.

Director’s statement
The age group intended for our series tend to be forgotten. Children learn about the universe until the age of 9-10 at school, but after this age, content is either very immature, too grown up and complicated or very extended and slow. We want to meet them with a youthful visual concept that fits their curiosity in a way that takes the age group seriously.

The 2020s are poised to be a golden age for space research, driven by new observatories and the promise of crewed space flights. Such projects have a fantastic ability to connect nations, giving us the opportunity to look at ourselves as a whole, and give us perspective.

In the series we combine science and philosophy and will also go into the dark parts of our universe, and explore not only the fantastical, but also the scarier sides of how the cosmos works. We feel it is important to meet the age group not only on the light side, but to be honest about the more complicated picture of our universe.
